You got the email. Your heart does a little jump, and you read the words: "We'd like to invite you for an interview." After the initial wave of excitement, the nerves kick in. What do you say? What do you wear? What if they ask a question you can’t answer?
Deep breath. An interview isn’t a final exam; it’s a conversation. It's a chance for a company to see if you’re the right fit for their team and, just as importantly, for you to see if they’re the right fit for your future.
Getting through that first interview is all about nailing the fundamentals. Think of it as the qualifying round. In this post, we’ll cover the must-do basics to make a stellar first impression. In Part 2, we’ll dive deeper into advanced strategies to help you seal the deal in the final rounds.
Ready? Let's get you prepared.
Phase 1: The Pre-Game Homework
Showing up unprepared is the fastest way to get cut. Walking in with knowledge shows you're serious, respectful, and genuinely interested.
Go Beyond the Homepage: Don't just read the "About Us" page and call it a day. Dig deeper. What are the company's latest projects or product launches? Have they been in the news recently? What are their core values, and how do they align with your own? Knowing this lets you speak their language.
Dissect the Job Description: Print out the job description and grab a highlighter. What are the top three skills they mention repeatedly? What are the key responsibilities? Be ready to give a specific example from your experience for each of those key points. This is your study guide!
Know Your Audience: If you know who you’ll be meeting with, look them up on LinkedIn. What is their role? How long have they been at the company? Finding a common connection (like the same university or a shared professional interest) can be a great way to build rapport.
Phase 2: Mastering the "Tell Me About Yourself" Play
This is almost always the first question, and how you answer sets the tone for the entire interview. It's not an invitation to ramble about your childhood dog. It's a chance to deliver your "elevator pitch."
Keep it concise and professional using this simple formula: Present - Past - Future.
Present: Start with where you are now. "Currently, I'm a senior at UC San Diego studying Communications, where I've been focusing on digital marketing..."
Past: Briefly mention relevant experience that led you here. "...This grew out of my internship last summer at [Company Name], where I had the chance to manage social media campaigns and analyze user engagement data."
Future: Connect your story to the job you're interviewing for. "...I'm a huge admirer of your company's approach to community building, and I'm eager to bring my skills in digital marketing to a role where I can help grow that engagement even further."
This structure makes you sound polished, prepared, and focused on the value you can bring.
Phase 3: Your Questions Are Your Secret Weapon
At the end of the interview, they will ask, "Do you have any questions for us?" Having thoughtful questions ready is one of the best ways to show your interest and intelligence. This is your chance to interview them!
Avoid questions you could have easily Googled. Instead, ask questions that show you're thinking about the role and the company on a deeper level:
About the Role: "What does success look like in this position within the first 90 days?"
About the Team: "What is the team dynamic like, and how does this role fit into the larger department?"
About the Future: "What are some of the biggest challenges the team is facing right now that this role would help solve?"
Asking smart questions turns the interview from an interrogation into a collaborative conversation.
What's Next?
Nailing these fundamentals—research, a strong personal pitch, and thoughtful questions—is your ticket to the next round. You've shown you're a serious candidate who has what it takes.
But what happens in round two or three, when the questions get tougher?
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we'll dive deep into the advanced playbook. We’ll cover how to master tricky behavioral questions using the STAR method, how to talk about salary with confidence, and the art of the follow-up email that will make you unforgettable. You've got this!
